A former Hibbing High School teacher and worked for both the Erie and Hanna Mining Companies. He served as an historian for the Ironworld Discovery Center in Chisholm before becoming the Commissioner of Iron Range Resources under Minnesota Governor Al Quie (1979-83). McGauley was born in Duluth, received his masters degree from the University of Minnesota, and has lived in Hibbing for the past thirty-seven years.
