Author Biography
Ichiyo, Higuchi (Author)
Ichiyo was the leading woman writer of the Meiji Period and an inspiration to those who followed. She had a limited education and often lived in great poverty but met these obstacles with talent and determination. Best known for her short stories and diary, she also wrote numerous poems. A major theme, personally apt, is that people are denied happiness because of their circumstances in life. Just when others finally recognized her talents, she died of tuberculosis at the age of 24.
