The cookbook, supposedly written by Ramotswe, is the brainchild of Stuart Brown, a charity worker and former BBC journalist from Edinburgh. He collected authentic Botswanan recipes while working for a charity in Africa and was given Mr McCall Smith's blessing for the project. The author has written a forward and reflections from Ramotswe to accompany the recipes in the book.
