Lavin, Maud (Editor)
Annette Michelson was born Annette Michelsohn in Manhattan, New York on November 7, 1922. She received a bachelor's degree in 1945 from Brooklyn College. She pursued graduate studies in art history and philosophy at Columbia University and the University of Paris. While in France she wrote and edited for several publications and translated the essays of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. She returned to New York in 1966. In 1967, she helped start a program in cinema history and criticism at New York University's Graduate School of the Arts and Science. She taught there for decades.

In 1966, she became an associate editor of Artforum and wrote for and helped plan numerous issues over the next 10 years. In 1976, she and Rosalind E. Krauss founded the arts journal October. Michelson edited several books including Andy Warhol and October: The First Decade. She also played a woman undergoing psychoanalysis in Yvonne Rainer's Journeys From Berlin/1971. She died on September 17, 2018 at the age of 95.
