More DescriptionHenry Ranutti is a quiet, private, lonely man who has always believed in the idea there is only one perfect partner in life. As a scientist his approach to life is organized and methodical. As a man he devotes his personal life to those he loves. After being divorced, hurt and betrayed he finds the one woman he believes is the love of his life only to have her return to her native Romania. She returns years later, married and with children. He has himself remarried but he finds himself unavoidably drawn to this woman in a doomed love affair that although ends physically continues to thrive in his heart until his death. Loss does not deter his belief that love and hope are the redeeming qualities he has as a human being. He finds the validation to his theories as his beloved -suffering from Alzheimer's and aware only of her feelings towards him- holds his hand as he dies. These are however pieces of a puzzle no one has all the answers to. Throughout the novel, Henry's son, out of filial devotion, attempts to assemble his father's life by reading his journals and letters, in conversations with friends and family and his discovery of his father's secret passion leads him to understanding and respect for his father's life long quiet pain and solitude.
