In the spring of 2018, Clinical Psychologist Dr Phil Lurie walked 1200km across Japan, becoming the first person to visit all 46 locations of Hokusai's Views of Mount Fuji. He has written about his experiences in his new book - Moving Mountains: A Walk Across Japan - of the people, the Japanese way of life, the landscapes, the food and the changing culture, and with plenty of anecdotes including how he not only managed to upset a Zen monk but accidentally joined in one man's private bath time.
The walk took Phil across the urban metropolis of Greater Tokyo and through rural parts of unknown Japan, along coastal paths, within valleys, inside temples and finally to the top of Mount Fuji itself. He even spent a night in a Christmas-themed love hotel. In April.
As a Clinical Psychologist, Phil wrote not only about the walk but also of mental health, emotional well-being and his own personal experiences of how to live a meaningful life. Before Phil set off he was burnt-out by the daily grind; by the end of the walk he was, as the Buddhists might say, enlightened to a new outlook on life.
