Plato had discussed these opposites extensively, and even in the early Christian church music became the focus of far-reaching discussions. In her study, Jutta Gunther evaluates all the writings by four authoritative authors from the late third and fourth centuries who deal with the subject of music: Eusebius of Caesarea (339/340), Lakanz (325) and the two church fathers John Chrysostom, (407) and Augustine of Hippo (430). The young Christian church, still under construction, enthusiastically discusses the pros and cons of music in a cultural-cultic framework and demonstrates a pioneering and identity-creating approach, without which the history of the music of the West would have taken a significantly different path.
