More DescriptionThe Japanese language is unique and while it was influenced by the Chinese language, both languages are completely different. The Japanese had their way of speaking and only used symbols to represent it. These symbols do not have the same pronunciation as those of China, and many of them are not exactly the same as those of China either. These "symbols" are known as kanji.
For starters, kanji is one of the three writing systems used to write Japanese. This system has its origin in China and was brought to Japan hundreds of years ago when Japanese was just a spoken language. They are those letters that have many "lines" and look like drawings. Those are the famous kanji, and in Japanese, they are mainly used to express words and concepts.
Formerly the Japanese language was only a spoken language since it did not have any writing system. When Japan and China began to have their first dialogues and exchanges, the Chinese showed these letters to Japanese scribes through stamps and letters, and they brought them to Japan.
Later the Japanese language began to be written entirely with these letters. And much later they made some modifications and based on the kanjis the other two syllabaries that they currently use together were created.
- There are more than 40,000 kanjis, but the Japanese are required to know only 2,136. The latter belong to the Joyo Kanji. If a kanji that is not within the Joyo Kanji appears in a text, its syllabic transcription known as Furigana must be added.
- The kanji makes the language readable and has the necessary balance. In the Japanese language there are many homophone words, that is, there are words that are pronounced the same but have different meanings.
- Another good thing about Kanji is that these letters are literally like pictures. A Japanese person sees a Kanji, and quickly understands the meaning. That is why they read so fast. This happens because kanjis are like drawings or images that, when seen, easily transmit their meaning to them or the meaning of the word they make up.
- Kanji is a Chinese writing system that was imported to Japan hundreds of years ago. They are those letters that have many lines and look like drawings. Those are the famous kanji, and in Japanese, they are mainly used to express words and concepts. In other words, the kanji does all the hard work in the texts. He is responsible for readability.
In Japan, children learn the first 1,006 kanji in primary school and the rest in secondary school.
