My First Book of Berachot
Hebrew & English Blessings for Jewish Children
Blessings are at the very center of Jewish spiritual life. When we say them, we acknowledge God as the Creator and source of everything that happens to us. This little book is an excellent entry into the world of the Jewish idea of hakarat hatov - acknowledging the goodness that happens all around us.
My First Book of Berachot is a cheerful and colorful introduction to blessings and contains four sections:
- Birchot ha-Shachar: Morning Blessings, which are part of the shacharit (morning service). The version used in this book presents inclusive language ("who made me a Jew", "who made me free", etc.) as accepted in the progressive Judaism movements.
- Birchot ha-Nehenin: Blessings recited before food and pleasant smells. Includes one blessing (borei nefashot) for blessing after the meal.
- Birchot ha-Mitzvot: Blessings recited before doing a mitzvah (commandment), such as putting on tzitzit, affixing a mezuza, and a number of holiday-related commandments.
- Birchot Shevach u-Hoda'a: Blessings expressing awe, joy, gratefulness, or sorrow.
Each blessing is presented on a separate page with the Hebrew text, English transliteration, and translation. There is also a related picture next to it to help the child learn the meaning of it.
My First Book of Berachot' Highlights:
- Hebrew text of each beracha with transliteration and translation
- Colorful and meaningful images help to learn the meaning of each blessing.
- A great companion for Jewish children who have just started learning Jewish liturgy.
- Big size - easy to read and find the appropriate blessing when needed.
- Great idea for a gift for Jewish boys and girls, and a teaching tool for Jewish teachers
