Elizabeth Ann Smart-Gilmour was born on November 3, 1987. At the age of 14, she was kidnapped from her home on June 5, 2002 and rescued nine months later. She testified to being threatened, tied, and raped daily while she was held captive. In 2006, she went to Congress to support sexual predator legislation and the AMBER Alert system. In 2008, she helped present a book, You're Not Alone, published by the U.S. Department of Justice, which has entries written by her as well as four other recovered young adults. In 2011, she was hired as a commentator for ABC news concerning the coverage of missing persons.
Her memoir, My Story, was published in 2013 with Chris Stewart as the co-author. The book details both the kidnapping and the formation of the Elizabeth Smart Foundation which tries to promote awareness about abduction.
