More DescriptionNadine Martin is one of the most popular girls at Roosevelt High School; liked especially for her genuine kindness. Adele Wilson - who suffers from a slight mental condition; causing her to be a bit stunted in her maturity, and extremely introverted to most - is the most misunderstood student at the school; referred to by most as either the "Retard" or "Freak". Ostracized by most of her classmates...and in a way, most of the faculty as well...Nadine seems to be one of the few who has ever shown any consideration to Adele. After witnessing this one day himself, Mr. Trudeaux "enlists" Adele into his Sociology class to partake in a class project. Mr. Trudeaux pairs Nadine and Adele to become friends for the school year. And, although this starts out as being a class assignment; Nadine and Adele quickly connect and become best friends. Shortly after this, Nadine finds out that her leukemia has returned for the third time; and that she will not survive her bout with the disease this time. Nadine now avows to help Adele build up her self-esteem and confidence, and to show everyone else at the school what a truly wonderful person Adele is; and, to treat her with the respect that she deserves. At first, Nadine decides to keep her fate from Adele; so not to upset Adele, and hinder her from helping Adele. But, eventually Adele does find out; and, now Adele is suddenly thrust into the position of becoming Nadine's emotional support. Now they each rely upon each other; and help each other face their challenges. And as Nadine's illness progresses, people at Roosevelt begin to see Adele in a new light; and Nadine's desire to get Adele respect seems to be flourishing. And as the disease consumes Nadine, making her weaker; Adele remains vigilant in comforting Nadine...and becomes stronger herself while doing so. Eventually, Nadine passes...and, once again...it seems as if Adele is left on her own. But...in actuality...she isn't. And a final "confrontation" with a long time bully of hers, proves to others that Adele Wilson is no longer the "Retard" or "Freak" that all pegged her out to be. For, through Nadine's death...Adele has come to be "born".
