Many of the houses are thatched roof, mud-walled, earthen floor dwellings. Most of the people who live in the village are former Indian indentured immigrants (girmitiyas) and their descendants who built a community on the outskirts of the estate where they practiced their culture and religion and passed it on to their descendants. Most of the stories in this book mixes folklore, history and creativity with village life and are set in this village right after the end of indentureship through to the 1970s. The stories capture life in those times and will surely evoke nostalgia in older readers and educate younger ones about their past. Nandi Village.
