Can the rational force of science be maintained - even if there is no "ultimate" truth?
Relativism is the view that knowledge is relative to the person, culture, or time in which it is held. Relativism seems to follow from the rejection of truth as a substantial goal of philosophy. As many contemporary thinkers have entertained the idea that truth is not a matter of correspondence, relativism appears to be gaining in credibility. For those who believe that science, at least, can discover some truth, an attack against all truth and knowledge seems extreme. Can scientific knowledge be protected against relativism, even if we do reject the correspondence theory of truth? The alternative is one in which causation is the integral concept in our system of knowledge, subject however to the understanding that truth is only a matter of the cohesion of our ideas. The result is a comprehensive system of knowledge that preserves the "sanctity" of science but rejects the notion of truth. The program dedicated to this task we call Naturalism.
