Helmut Christoferus Calabrese is a composer and poet born in Germanyin 1957; he immigrated to the U.S. in 1962. At the PhiladelphiaCollege of Performing Arts, where he earned his Bachelor of Music incomposition, his teachers included Richard Everill, Theodore Antoniou,and Andrew Rudin. At New York University, where he earned his Ph.D.in composition, his teacher was Ron Mazurek. At the Berklee Collegeof Music, Dr. Calabrese studied Film Scoring techniques with MichaelRendish. Following his doctorate, Dr. Calabrese began teaching musicand is a founding member of the music publishing company CalabreseBrothers Music, LLC.Dr. Calabrese starting writing poetry in 1975. His poetry has been published in the followingliterary publications: The LYNX, BIG HAMMER, Street Value, and LUMMOX.His music writing styles can be classified in the genres of "serious" classical, "light" classicaland contemporary gospel. His "sound" and film scores manifest influences of Ennio Morricone,Edgard Varese, and Bernard Herrmann.Coming from a concert music background, Dr. Calabrese applies to film scoring theorchestration and dramatic setting skills he acquired composing a one-act opera The Pearl(1979) and most recently the Italian feature film score Il Gioco È Fatto directed by FrancescoRusso and winner of the award for "Best First Work" at the 2011 Terra di Siena InternationalFilm Festival. Dr. Calabrese continues to score music for independent short films and featurefilms for filmmakers throughout the world.ASCAPLUS awards from 2003 to 2009 by ASCAP. He was nominated by two United StatesCongressional Bills 1989, 1991 and 1993 to designate his song, "The Most Beautiful Ladyin the World: Statue of Liberty Anthem" as official anthem of Statue of Liberty. He wasalso nominated by two State of New Jersey Bills in 2002 and 2004 that "call on congress todesignate" this anthem as the official anthem of the Statue of Liberty.In 2012, Dr. Calabrese received the Best International Traditional Movie Music Award at theGarden State Film Festival.Cover Art by Iulia Sima.
