More DescriptionThis report summarizes the presentations from a strategy forum co-hosted by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) and Arizona State University (ASU). Held in Phoenix, Arizona during the week the Arizona State Legislature passed the controversial legislation SB 1070, the forum brought together researchers, activists, clergy, and other community stakeholders working with immigrant women, especially Latinas. The speakers and guests discussed the challenges Latina immigrants often encounter, identified key public policies that can exacerbate or mitigate these challenges, and strategized for ways to promote positive policy change. Their discussions centered around two panels, a luncheon address by Arizona State House Representative Kyrsten Sinema, and an afternoon presentation by Jennifer Allen, Executive Director of Border Action Network. The event and report were part of a two-year research project on religious congregations and nonprofit organizations working with Latina immigrants in Phoenix, Atlanta, and Northern Virginia. The project was funded by the Ford Foundation.
