More DescriptionAlthough norovirus is not influenza, it is sometimes referred to as the stomach flu due to its severe diarrhea and vomiting. It is very contagious and can be transmitted via contaminated individuals, food, or surfaces.
A norovirus infection can cause abrupt onset of severe vomiting and diarrhea. Noroviruses are extremely infectious. They typically spread through contaminated food or drink during preparation or via infected surfaces. Noroviruses can also be transmitted by intimate contact with an infected person.
Typically, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and vomiting occur 12 to 48 hours after exposure. Symptoms of a norovirus infection often last one to three days. The majority of people heal without treatment. However, vomiting and diarrhea can be extremely dehydrating for some individuals, particularly young children, older adults, and those with other medical issues.
Norovirus infection is especially prevalent in confined and crowded spaces. Hospitals, nursing homes, child care centers, schools, and cruise ships are examples.
