Kate Tempest was born Kate Esther Calvert on December 22, 1985 in Brockley, South East London, England. She was educated at the BRIT School for the Performing Arts and Technology in Croydon, and Goldsmiths, University of London.

She is an award-winning poet, spoken word artist and playwright. Her work includes Everything Speaks in its Own Way, Everybody Down, and Hold Your own. Her plays include Glasshouse, Wasted, and Hopelessly Devoted. She won the 2013 Ted Hughes Award for her work Brand New Ancients. In 2014 she was selected as one of the Next Generation Poets by the Poetry Society. The Bricks that Built the Houses is her debut novel.
