Taken from his dying mother and confined to a harsh and unloving orphanage, young Oliver is placed with an undertaker and his wife as a fostered apprentice, only to be driven away by his foster mother¿s abuse. He falls in with Fagin, the master of a band of child thieves, who plays on the youngster¿s need for affection to lure him into the band. But Oliver¿s first attempt at thieving is a failure... luckily, for his ¿victim¿ is the compassionate Mr. Brownlow, who takes Oliver into his home. But Fagin is not done with Oliver Twist, for he knows a secret about the boy that even Oliver doesn¿t know, and schemes to steal him back. But Fagin¿s assistant Nancy, who has always been fond of Oliver, helps him to escape again, at the risk of Fagin¿s dangerous wrath. The truth is revealed: Fagin knows Oliver¿s background and was plotting to steal his inheritance.
