Welcome to the Orton Collection 2022! This year we announced the competition in January. The nights were dark and the cold was creeping under all of our doors. So, what better theme to have than Ghost Stories!
We asked for stories of spooks and ghouls, of hauntings in graveyards or souls living in computers. Spine chilling tales of angry ghosts seeking revenge, of bemused ghosts who can't accept their condition. Of those haunted by the ghosts of the past, or maybe ghosts aren't as scary as we are led to believe. We wanted stories that we couldn't look away from even as we were too scared to read on. And these were delivered! Prepare yourself for spine tingling and goosebumps.
A theme that we didn't expect came up. Love. The deep kind that lasts and haunts. And not only romantic. It speaks of lost love as something external, that hovers around you unchanging, like a ghost, and the stories in this collection show that to be beautiful and terrible.
We also had many wonderfully creepy stories. Stories that played with tension, stories that kept the creepy level at high. And some beautiful and thoughtful takes on the theme. We had many a sleepless night after the reading period. And one of us even started having nightmares, but that was probably unrelated. When we met to judge the stories, there were arguments and many offers to fight one another for the glory of our favourite.
