More DescriptionSinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses that can lead to congestion and fluid accumulation. Common causes include the common cold and allergies. The obstruction could result in an infection.
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the tissue that lines the sinuses. There are four pairs of sinus chambers in the head. They are linked by means of tiny waterways. The sinuses produce thin mucus that drains out of the nose's drainage canals.
This drainage aids in keeping the nose clean and bacteria-free. The sinuses, which are normally filled with air, can become obstructed and filled with fluid. When this occurs, bacteria may proliferate and create an infection (bacterial sinusitis).
This is also known as rhinosinusitis, where "rhino" refers to the nose. Inflamed sinus tissue almost always causes swelling of the nasal tissue.
