More DescriptionThe disorder pleurisy is characterized by inflammation of the pleura, the two broad, thin layers of tissue that divide the lungs from the chest wall. Pleurisy, also known as pleuritis, produces chest pain (pleuritic pain) that intensifies with respiration.
One layer of pleural tissue surrounds the exterior of the lungs. The inner chest wall is lined with the other pleural layer. Between these two layers is a small area (pleural space) that is typically filled with a minute amount of liquid. These layers function like two pieces of satin slipping past one another, allowing your lungs to expand and contract with each breath.
When pleurisy is present, these tissues enlarge and become inflamed. As a result, the two layers of the pleural lining rub like sandpaper against each other. This creates discomfort when inhaling and exhaling. When you hold your breath, the pleuritic pain lessens or stops.
