This novella was inspired by the conversation between Darcy and Elizabeth in which he answers Elizabeth's sceptical comment about one sonnet being likely to kill off the feeling of love with these words: "I have been used to consider poetry as the food of love." It begins when Darcy, as a young man, falls in love with his best friend's sister, Amelia, and writes her a poem. This novella was inspired by the conversation between Darcy and Elizabeth in which he answers Elizabeth's sceptical comment about one sonnet being likely to kill off the feeling of love with these words: "I have been used to consider poetry as the food of love." It begins when Darcy, as a young man, falls in love with his best friend's sister, Amelia, and writes her a poem. The poem does not have the intended effect - indeed, it seems to work in the same way as Elizabeth's remark suggests. That is why, many years later, he is upset by this conversation and wonders if Elizabeth really is the woman for him. Nevertheless, when he takes the plunge and presents her with a sonnet, her appreciation is everything that he hoped for. As a result, more poems follow - but the Muse is a demanding mistress, and the more Darcy gets into poetry, the more problems arise in his relationship with Elizabeth.
