Ten years have passed since the outlaw Gideon Fitzsimmons, Viscount St. Mars (aka Blue Satan) and his wife Hester sailed from England to France to live together without the threat of arrest. Despite the joys that have come with a growing family, they have also been subject to dangers. When news arrives that George I has died, they decide to risk all to return to England to establish St. Mars's innocence and to reclaim his birthright. No sooner do they land in Dover, however, than someone tries to kill him. The villain escapes, but in London other attempts occur. Does the threat come from St. Mars's cousin Harrowby as he tries to hang on to the title of Earl of Hawkhurst, from an enemy out of Hester's past, or from an unknown murderer who wants to destroy Gideon, and if so, why? His future, and that of his family, rests on the case he will bring in the House of Lords, but as the case wavers, the assassin strikes again. St. Mars works to discover the villain's identity, while Hester searches for a missing piece of evidence to prove her husband's innocence.
