More DescriptionPoetry on Our Terms: Winners of the 2014 7GP 7th Grade Poetry Contest is the result of the nation's most inclusive 7th grade poetry writing program. More than 1,250 schools of every type, including charter, faith-based, public and private, were invited to be a part of the program. From the 120 schools that decided to participate, 8,100 students were given the freedom of creative self-expression through poetry: to write their own poem about any theme and in any style. Students wrote more than 4,200 poems specifically for the chance to be in this book. This book celebrates the 120 poets and their poems that were chosen by their respective schools. A copy of this anthology was given to each winning poet, their school, and community library. Inside, they will find sonnets, haikus, and rhyming odes written by peers. While one writer bemoans the horrors of war, another proudly salutes the military victories of our country. Native American students write about themes influenced by their culture. Elsewhere, there is the pain of being orphaned, the appreciation of family and belonging, and several close examinations of bullying. From poem to poem, stanza to stanza, you can see how the contest's freedom empowered each newly published poet to celebrate his or her voice.Ultimately, this book is about respect--respect for young authors and their ability to tell us something important. Poetry is better on their terms, where the craft of writing and love of language exhibited by each poet clearly speaks for itself.
