More DescriptionThis book is the first of a series of books, suitable for children from the stages of not able to read, to becoming literate. It will also help people who want to learn to read English. The authors were primary school teachers who had great experience in the teaching of reading to children, particularly those who had learning difficulties. These books became standard text books in many schools, in particular in the North of England during the 1970's and '80's, and many teachers and their former pupils were grateful for the ease with which they began to understand the basics of written English. Most teachers in the modem Infant School teach reading using a mixture of 'Look and Say' and phonetic sounds. 'Look and Say' succeeds when the child has a good visual memory and can remember those words he has once learnt. Phonetic methods ensure a basic training in the sounds the letters make so that, once a child has learnt the sounds, the child can build up words from them. In the English language however, many letters, especially the vowels, have more than one sound and it is difficult for the inexperienced reader to know which sound to use. The Reading by Rainbow system overcomes these problems by using coloured letters to indicate different letter sounds, thus removing the ambiguity of the English language. Teacher's Notes are included.
