There was bitter rivalry between Union General Benjamin Kelley and Jon Ross McCabe. Kelley captured McCabe during an 1861 battle in Missouri and made hostages of his family. After his escape to Western Virginia these adversaries chased and eluded one another until the end of the Civil War. McCabe¿s band of raiders worked with Generals Lee and Jackson. They prolonged the war by confiscating Yankee supply wagons and disrupting rail lines.
