Born in Recife, Brazil, in 1886, Manuel Bandeira was raised in Rio de Janeiro and Ceara. He began to write poetry at an early age. In 1917 he selected some of his poems and published them under the title A Cinza das horas, which became an instant success. From that point he dedicated his life to the poetic art and published a sizable amount of verse.

Bandeira's verses display vague romantic overtones and are often touched with irony, melancholy, and tragic humor. At times his verse also contains small biographical sketches. In his work, Bandeira used traditionally rhymed verse as well as the unrhymed freer forms advocated by the bards of the modernist movement.
