When a provider begins a relationship with a patient, the provider must build an understanding of what makes the patient tick, what motivates them, and who the patient is. Understanding the patient's faith is a crucial step in this process. Unfortunately, providers tend to only fully understand the faith or religion of the faith or religion that they themselves practice.

Healthcare providers are living in the most diverse time in history and are taking care of patients from all corners of the globe. To fully understand these patients, providers also must have at least a basic understanding of their religions. To comprehend religion, providers need a resource to religions' history, doctrine, rituals, customs, traditions, dietary restrictions, and practices around birth and death.
