More DescriptionDuring the first half of the twenty-first century the populations of most developed countries are projected to become smaller and older. This study examines the possible effects of replacement migration on the size and age structure of eight countries, including the UK. It concludes that the levels of migration needed to offset population ageing and maintain support ratios are extremely high, vastly more than has occurred in the past. Possible future increases in productivity for people aged under 65 cannot on its own be a solution for the decline in active support ratios but these support ratios could be maintained by increasing the upper limit of the working-age to 75.
