Alice M. Rivlin was born Georgianna Alice Mitchell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 4, 1931. She received a bachelor's degree from Bryn Mawr College and completed graduate work at Harvard University. She was an economist who spent much of her career bouncing back and forth between The Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank, and top government posts including vice chairwoman of the Federal Reserve Board. She was the founding director of the Congressional Budget Office and ran the District of Columbia's Financial Management Assistance Authority. She also wrote editorials for The Washington Post in the 1970s and wrote a regular column for The Los Angeles Times. Her book, Reviving the American Dream: The Economy, the States and the Federal Government, was published in 1992. She died on May 14, 2019 at the age of 88.
