More DescriptionThe illustrated exhibition catalogue for Return to the Ashcan, an exhibition curated by Jorge Hilker Santis. The catalogue includes an essay by Dr. Carol Troyen, the Kristin and Roger Servison Curator Emerita of American Paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Return to the Ashcan is an exhibition of 40 works of art by the most noted members of this short-lived yet profoundly influential artistic movement. Many of the oils, pastels, and photographs are on loan from some of the most important public collections in the United States. The time period covered by the exhibition is 1893 to 1921, and the settings include not only the widely anticipated streets of New York City but locales as diverse as Philadelphia; Gloucester, Massachusetts; and even the far-flung city of Brussels, Belgium. As expected, Robert Henri and his four closest collaborators – George Luks, Everett Shinn, William Glackens, and John Sloan – are generously represented in Return to the Ashcan. Furthermore, there are also noted contributions by George Bellows (1882-1925), Guy Péne du Bois (1884-1958), Jerome Myers (1867-1904), and Edith Dimock Glackens (1876-1955). The themes of the artworks range far and wide – from city life, which initially was an all-consuming attraction to this group of young painters, to other subjects, including landscape, genre scenes, and portraiture.
The exhibition is on view at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University, from October 20, 2012 until February 24th, 2013.
