Writer, poet and translator Rewi Alley was born in Amberley, New Zealand, on December 2, 1897. After being a soldier and farmer, Alley moved to Shanghai and eventually joined the communist movement. When the civil war ended in 1950 , he continued to promote communism in his writings. Among his writings are The People Have Strength and Human China: A Diary.
Alley later became involved in education, starting a series of technical schools in China. He died in Beijing, China, in 1987.
