RIGVEDA - SELECT VERSES - SANSKRIT ORIGINAL AND ENGLISH TRANSLATION is the only book that gives the original Vedic Sanskrit text and explains the meaning of every word and phrase to methodically arrive at a faithful, modern English translation of the Rigveda. This unique book is for those who are interested to understand the real meaning of the verses but might not know Vedic Sanskrit to do it themselves.
From the exquisite and timeless treasure trove of the Rigveda, I have selected over 200 significant and relevant verses that highlight its exceptional variety and appeal to me from prevalent religious, cultural, social, historical, and literary perspectives.
- Verses of Gods and Goddesses like Agni, Durga, Ganesha, Indra, Kartikeya, Lakshmi, Sarasvati, Shiva, Sita, Usha, Vishnu, and so on
- Verses offering glimpses of Vedic life, society, and customs
- Verses on music, calendar, and advancements of the Vedic age
- Quotable verses of universal wisdom, teachings, and beliefs
- Inspirational verses of spirituality, prayers, and quests
- Gayatri Mantra, Shri Sukta, and verses of the Supreme Being
- Devi (Goddess), Creation (Nasadiya), Purusha, and Unity hymns
Each verse of the Rigveda consists of a Samhita text for recitation and a Pada text for reference. In this book, I have organized the verses by subject and arranged one verse per page in two columns. In the left column, I have shown the original Samhita and Pada texts with English translation. In the right column, I have given the detailed structure and meaning of every word and phrase. In the title of each verse, I have indicated its number, dedication, and traditional or contemporary association. Below the title, I have noted its sage (author), meter (rhythm), and likely Vedic period of authorship.
I have meticulously analyzed the Vedic Sanskrit language and contexts of the verses to derive my own American English translation. Throughout, I have drawn on traditional beliefs and rational definitions to translate the verses into relatable references and modern vocabulary. Since no one really knows the exact essence the ancient sages had in mind, I have stayed true to the meanings of their words and phrases, and carefully refrained from unnecessary inference or flourish of my own. Where words and expressions have multiple or obscure meanings, my translation might differ from those who preferred a different connotation.
This is the 3rd edition with 70% more verses and e-book friendly arrangement, formatting, and fonts. I have also published it at almost the minimum price Amazon allowed so that anyone can read it.
