"Rocks Never Sleep" describes how little a rock can do, how few abilities it has, yet it can still achieve satisfaction in finding usefulness in the world. The verses describe all of the things a rock cannot do and all of the attributes it does not have, such as, “I stay very still, I sit in one place, I can’t smile or frown, ‘Cuz I don’t have a face.” Then, “I can’t blow bubbles, I can’t run or play, I just sit here and sit here, Day...
More Description"Rocks Never Sleep" describes how little a rock can do, how few abilities it has, yet it can still achieve satisfaction in finding usefulness in the world. The verses describe all of the things a rock cannot do and all of the attributes it does not have, such as, “I stay very still, I sit in one place, I can’t smile or frown, ‘Cuz I don’t have a face.” Then, “I can’t blow bubbles, I can’t run or play, I just sit here and sit here, Day after day.” I am a rock,
a lump of really hard dirt. with no skin or bones, I never get hurt. Rocks never sleep, so I don’t have a bed and I don’t need a pillow ‘cuz I don’t have a head.” Rocks seem to be just big useless lumps. The story continues with, “No, I might not look or even act like you, but I have an important job that I do.” The story then describes how the people in the towns on the hills kept getting lost because all of the hills looked the same. Then someone put a different color flag atop each rock on each hill and the people are able to go right to the town (hill) where they want to go by using the flag as a guide. The story ends with, ”So, even a rock without much to do can still be quite useful and important, too.” The final verse sums everything up, “So, if you feel like a rock, find something useful to do ‘cuz anything you do is quite important, too.”
