More DescriptionAn exhibition of never before seen paintings and domestic objects from the La Conchita, California, home of Chicago Imagist Roger Brown; held at the Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, Illinois, June 20th through October 3rd, 2010; curated by Nicholas Lowe with assistance from the staff of the Roger Brown Study Collection of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Brown's three-dimensional Virtual Still Life series of paintings are displayed along with selected objects from his rich and meticulously arranged collections of domestic objects, vernacular ceramics and pop culture ephemera. Collecting and arranging these materials functioned as an important part of the artist's creative processes -- informing and occasionally being incorporated in his own work.In the late 1980s, Brown decided to move his winter studio from Chicago to Southern California, completing construction of a home and gardens in La Conchita in 1993. He adapted his collecting discipline to his new locale. Brown's collections evolved and reflected his visual vocabulary, as well as the time and the place where he lived. La Conchita was Brown's third intentionally-created home setting, combining architecture (with a studio at the heart), collected objects, and gardens. His evolving architectural, collecting, and gardening life was invariably distilled into his work.Through a series of gifts and bequests the School of the Art Institute of Chicago has become the primary repository of the personal, intellectual, and artistic effects of alumnus and internationally recognized artist, Roger Brown (1941-1997).
