More DescriptionThis is an historical novel about a Scandinavian nobleman Hrólfr, or Rollo as he was known later in life. His origins are disputed, so I have assumed his father was Jarl of Møre, Rognvald Einsteinsson. He was not a contemporary of Ragnarr Lothbrok but he almost certainly knew the warrior sons of Ragnarr, sometimes as allies and as enemies at other times. His father was an ally of Harald Fairhair and supported him in becoming the King of Norway.
Before he became the Duke of Normandy in 911, there are just a few references to him in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles. He was an ally of Guthrum, who was the Danish king of the Danelaw from 879 to 890. Together in 876 they sacked Rouen. In 885 Rollo is recorded as taking part in the unsuccessful siege of Paris.
He was known to have had a wife from Scotland/Pictland and possibly a daughter with her. He also had a Breton spouse, Poppa, with whom he had a son, William Longsword, who succeeded him as Count of Rouen.
His uncle, Sigurd Einsteinsson was the first Norwegian Jarl of Orkney. He was succeeded by two of Rollo's brothers.
So, with these facts I have woven a story of the warrior life of Rollo the Ganger (Walker) from 872 to the end of the 9th century, and made assumptions regarding which historical events and battles he would have taken part in.
