More DescriptionThis summary is a cumulative revelation and perceptive distillation of The New York Times bestselling author of Redeeming Love, as she returns with a lovely new western romance.
In this epic, romantic narrative of an exiled New England suffragette, a former Union soldier disinherited by his Southern family, and the town they join forces to defend.
When Kathryn Walsh arrives in tiny Calvada, a mining town tucked in the Sierra Nevadas, she has no intention of falling in love. Her affluent stepfather has exiled her from Boston, and she has come to claim an inheritance from an uncle she never knew: a defunct newspaper office on a main street lined with brothels and saloons, as well as a seemingly useless mine. Kathryn is moved by the tyranny of local miners and their families and chooses to relaunch her uncle's newspaper--only to find herself in the midst of a whirlpool, poised against Calvada's most powerful men. Kathryn, on the other hand, intends to stay -- and publish -- whatever she wants, especially when she thinks she's correct.
Matthias Beck, the proprietor of a local bar and hotel, is particularly interested in the newcomer. He immediately recognizes the attractive and opinionated redhead as having C. T. Walsh's tenacity, and he knows how harmful that family characteristic can be. While Kathryn may be correct in her assessment of Calvada's difficulties, her righteousness may lead to her death. Matthias' restless search for meaning becomes all about following the call of his heart as the gorgeous hotelier keeps finding himself on the same side of the problems as the feisty Miss Walsh.
Everyone in this lawless boomtown is hoping to strike it rich, but it will be a love more precious than gold that will save them all in the end.
