More DescriptionEnglish summary: Pain as a borderline experience also implies that talking about pain has its limitations. And through pain a human being reaches his own limits, be it in relation to himself, to the world or to God. Pain, writes Georg Buchner, tears a rift through creation from top to bottom. In this regard speaking about pain eludes the accepted divisions into subject and object, into part and whole. Besides, pain has no specific location nor is it non-locational. It paralyses and instills passivity, yet it also activates us. It befalls us and is generated, it makes us speechless and blind, and yet it finds expression in words and images. These peculiar contradictions in the experience of pain were the topic of the 126th symposium held by the Evangelische Forschungsakademie January 7 to 9, 2011 in Berlin. In the course of the conference it turned out that dealing with pain as a borderline experience is constitutive not only for the field of medicine but also for philosophy and theology as well as for literature and the arts. Januar 2011 in Berlin.
