The writing of this book was motivated by a letter that my mother, Joanne Smith, wrote to me about her early relationship with my father, Jack Smith, and his side of the family. On the day of her death in 2020, I reread this letter for the first time since nearly 9 years earlier. Thanks to my wife, Melinda, for suggesting this would make a good novel. More DescriptionThe writing of this book was motivated by a letter that my mother, Joanne Smith, wrote to me about her early relationship with my father, Jack Smith, and his side of the family. On the day of her death in 2020, I reread this letter for the first time since nearly 9 years earlier. Thanks to my wife, Melinda, for suggesting this would make a good novel. It seems right to begin with that letter.
The story in this book is built upon the foundation of known facts and timelines that serves as its skeleton. The rest is fleshed out based on known personalities, stories told, and current events of the day. While the characters are real and all the events could be as well, the author has taken license to fill in the gaps so that the known facts come together in a natural way.
The story spans from the early 1900s through 2020, including historical events and real life family and friends of three generations of my family.
