More Description
Almost all jiu jitsu schools say that they teach self-defense. They are not terribly wrong, because they do teach self-defense techniques. However, self-defense is much more than than the self-defense techniques. The problem is not what is being taught; the problem is what's NOT being taught. Hopefully, this book will fill some of the gaps of knowledge, like for instance:
- How do you avoid getting in trouble?
- Do you know your physical and mental limits?
- Are you capable of seriously hurting someone?
- Will you freeze?
- Do you know what constitutes justifiable self-defense?
The book also discusses self-defense techniques, and these are all jiu jitsu techniques. However, the main focus is on the principles on which these techniques are founded, not so much on specific techniques.
The book is primarily written for martial arts and self-defense instructors, those who train and practice martial arts or self-defense and anyone who engages in or is interested in martial arts and self-defense. The book will also be suitable for professional groups such as police officers, customs officers, security guards, etc.
The author has been involved in the martial arts and self defense as a practitioner and an instructor for almost 30 years. Besides teaching self jiu jitsu and martial arts he teaches law, working as a university professor.
