More DescriptionThis book contains home services for the eve of the New Moon ('Rosh Chodesh') and the biblical New Year ('Rosh ha-Shanah'). In the Talmidi Israelite community, New Year is observed in the First-Month (following the commandment in Exodus 12:1-2), not in the Seventh-Month. In this respect, Talmidi custom follows the practice of the earliest Israelites, as well as that of the northern kingdom of Israel, whereas holding New Year in the Seventh-Month follows Canaanite and Babylonian practice. New Year in Nisan is therefore unreservedly a day of rejoicing, not sombreness. It celebrates God's Kingship, the Creation of the Universe, and the 'official' birthday of the planet Earth; it reminds human beings of our duty to act as careful and responsible stewards of life on Earth. This book also contains a full synagogue service for the biblical New Year, which celebrates the enthronement of God as Israel's King. The psalms sung during the service are the same ones that were sung in the northern kingdom on the first day of Nisan every year, celebrating the acclamation of God as our One Sovereign and King.
