More DescriptionThoughts on Shells: The constant wave action on the shore is always fascinating, and the natural churning shapes and breaks the shells in the surf. Shells lying in the sands of ocean beaches are subjected to constant wave action, polishing and shaping, sometimes revealing the hidden structure inside the shell, or creating provocative surfaces and shapes. Photographs of the shell freezes the shell's surface as it was at the time of collection. This provides a view of the transformation from integral shell, home to a living organism, to an object evincing a degree of deterioration. The interpretation of shell fragments through the photographic process and in the final print, with the imprint of the photographer, provides an outlet for expression that can range through a wide suite of thoughts and emotions. Viewing the prints provides a continuous means of transmitting the expressive intent of the photographer. Shells collected during walks on Atlantic beaches were placed as decorative objects in our house and then often stored away. The shells used for these photographs were old friends from these walks.
