Fortunately, Silas Marner is freer than any other of her books from these lapses, and, for this reason, possesses a unique artistic charm. There are, it is true, here and there, some abstract digressions even in Silas Marner, but they are never long and wearisome. The student, in passing, may simply note this as a characteristic trait of George Eliot's usual style, and rejoice that in the present instance the tendency is more honored in the breach than in the observance. Edward Dowden; in Studies in Literature, 1789-1877: The most important personality in her works is her second self. She condemns but does not hate; she has sympathy for all creatures.
