More DescriptionThere is no other exhibit like Outdoor Sculpture at Maudslay. This artist-organized event is site-specific, egalitarian, multi-generational, and uncurated. Its format inspires thought-provoking, accessible artwork. Over three hundred diverse artists, including professionals and those new to artmaking, created 700 plus in-site installations during its first twenty years. Photographs of over 400 of these accompany the show's history and culture. Artists' monumental scale, intimate, conceptual, or representational sculptures form this art in nature. The exhibit's origin, funding, format, and leave-no-trace philosophy, and anecdotes about the artists and their work personalize the book. Always outdoors, the art endures the elements - even an occasional Nor'easter. The public, local towns, and the State of Massachusetts have consistently supported the exhibit since 1998, verifying its value to the community. Inspiring backdrops are the rolling meadows, forests, water features, and historic gardens of Maudslay State Park in Newburyport. Open to walkers, those on horseback, and families, the park is an ideal venue for site-specific art. Self-expression is vital to the show these outdoor artists create. This book is their story.
