More DescriptionThe challenges of globalization today require the mastery of two or more languages to gain the much-needed competitive advantages in the job market, openness to multiculturalism, easy of travel and a plethora of other self-fulfilling accomplishments indispensable for personal emancipation in particular and social wellbeing in general. In light of the above, much valuable work has already been done in this field; but substantially by workers accustomed to bilingual and trilingual books which have left the lover of languages yearning for more. Moreover, the writings have been addressed rather to trained minds instead to immature learners.
This book by Nchumbonga George Lekelefac fills these gaps in existing literature by providing a simple Spanish and Portugese language research book to the academic world. The present book has two main contributions to the literature: it offers grammar lessons in the Spanishand Portuguese language with pedagogical elements of style that are tailored towards addressing the challenges in existing books. On the latter contribution of motivating the underpinnings on the insufficiencies of prior exposition, two facts are worth emphasizing. First, it is the leading object of the book to be both as scholarly and as practical as possible. Accordingly, in it there is an attempt to present grammatical facts as simply, and to lead the student to assimilate them as thoroughly, as possible, and at the same time mitigate confusing difficulties in existing literature. On the former contribution, as far as I have reviewed, I am unaware of parallel books that offer such simple grammatical insights. The pedagogical attributes are framed such that the learner or student is poised to learn a second language once started. To attain these ends, I have discovered that the book always keeps in the foreground the real basis of grammar. Wealth of examples are used to show the student that he/ she is dealing with the facts of the languages, and not with the theories of grammarians. Emphasis is placed both on language classics and "making-up" sentences. Hence, it is not intended that the use of literary masterpieces for grammatical purposes should supplant or even interfere with their proper use or real value of the wealth of intuition and personal initiatives. Accordingly, space has been provided for the student to actually have contact with the sources of grammatical laws, discover for him(her)self the better way of looking at given information.
Hence, the book is also tailored towards free expressions within the lines of good usage, thus broadening the learning horizon by providing much flexibility on how to master and use the languages. These contributions leave room for a much diversified audience: professionals, students.....etc. It has been the aim of Nchumbonga George Lekelefac to make a grammar of as wide a scope as is consistent with the proper definition of the word. Hence, in addition to recording and classifying the facts of languages, he has endeavoured to attain two other objects: to cultivate the mental skill, and to induce the students and professionals to pursue further studies in this field. The author has always loved languages and sharing his love to the academic world through this book is indeed another milestone. It is not supposable that in so delicate and difficult an undertaking in many languages, there should be an entire freedom from errors and oversights. He is humble servant and will gratefully accept any assistance towards correcting any mistakes arising. I therefore strongly recommend this book without reservations to students, professionals and lovers of languages who are interested in the improving their mastery of the Spanish and Portuguese language.
