Ukrajinka was a modernist poet at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. Her earliest works were lyric patriotic poems with exotic themes and motifs borrowed from remote times and places. After experimenting in prose drama, she wrote a great number of dramatic poems, the genre for which she is most famous. Her best work, the dramatic poem A Forest Song (1912), is based on Ukrainian folklore, as are many of her other works. Her main themes were love for her country and love of freedom.
