Lewis Gilbert was born in London, England on March 6, 1920. As a teenager, he had small roles in a few films. During World War II, he made several documentary shorts with the Royal Air Force. He became a director, producer, and screenwriter for films. He directed his first feature, The Little Ballerina, in 1948. His other films included Reach for the Sky, Carve Her Name with Pride, Sink the Bismarck!, You Only Live Twice, Alfie, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, Haunted, Educating Rita, Shirley Valentine, and Before You Go. His autobiography, All My Flashbacks, was published in 2010. He died on February 23, 2018 at the age of 97.
