More Description PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A SUMMARY OF BILLION DOLLAR WHALE BY TOM WRIGHT AND BRADLEY HOPE
The subtitle of Tom Wright and Bradley Hope's book Billion Dollar Whale is "The Man Who Fooled Wall Street, Hollywood, and the World," and it's not far off the mark.
It is based on the actual story of Jho Low, a Malaysian playboy who stole $4.5 billion from Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund, 1MDB, at least in part to support his extravagant lifestyle, which included a $250 million superyacht, and to assist Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak in maintaining power. Razak's administration was overthrown when he was arrested.
Money was moved across the world to conceal its origins, and numerous offshore accounts were created with names that sounded suspiciously like large businesses, in order to imply that these companies were involved and related, despite the fact that they were not. Blackstone and Blackrock were among the companies involved.
One of the oddest aspects of the narrative is that unlawfully obtained funds were used to create a TV and film production business, which subsequently produced the extremely popular Wolf of Wall Street for the big screen, which is about financial scandal and corruption, as many people will recall. Talk about being able to hide in plain sight!
