More DescriptionAccording to the Oxford Dictionaries, a 'paradigm shift' is a "fundamental change in approach or underlying assumptions" (OUP,2015). This snooker training book may be different from anything you have read before and, in my view, may represent a 'paradigm shift' in how ambitious amateur and professional snooker players may approach their training and practice in the future.
The practice routines in this book incorporate the principle of Thorndike and Woodworth's (1901) 'theory of identical elements', which suggests that the most effective form of practice closely approximates the conditions of competition. According to Cummings and Williams (2014), making training conditions like competition may prepare individuals to cope with the pressures involved in performing (which is the aim of this book). I have used simulation training in my coaching sessions. It is a recognised technique used in many different domains (arts, military, medicine, sports etc.) and may "instil a sense of performance accomplishment in athletes" (Cummings and Williams,2014).
However, the simulation training in this book will sometimes be highly challenging, even for the best players; therefore, it is for players with ambitions to play at the highest level. However, the best moments in life usually occur when a person's "body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile" (Csikszentmihalyi 2002, p.3).
Furthermore, the psychological aspects of the sport play a much more significant part in a player's preparation for success. Therefore, this book contains psychological and philosophical information that may be informative and useful to consider on your improvement journey.
Simulation training may be a different approach to your preparation; however, training and practicing as players did in the past might not be enough to achieve success at a high level because the game has moved on, and the standard of play is much higher now. To succeed, you may need to find every slight advantage you can, and the information in this book may help you to do this.
