More DescriptionSven Gustafson: Colorist provides the first comprehensive look at the work of the artwork of Sven Gustafson (1898-1967). Gustafson, a Swedish-American painter, was the brother of Greta Garbo. This richly illustrated book provides a broad survey of the artist's work from every period of his artistic production.
Sven Gustafson's paintings are driven by color. The influences on his work are outlined in a ground breaking critical essay by Robert Flynn Johnson, Curator Emeritus, Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Johnson celebrates Sven Gustafson's mastery of the difficult watercolor medium. He notes the impact of Gustafson's studies at The Art Student's League of New York with teachers Hans Hoffman and George Grosz, and contemporaries, such as Milton Avery and Clyfford Still. Johnson also portrays the influence of Gustafson's Parisian teacher, Andre L' hote, and such masters as Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, and Paul Klee.
There is also a biographical essay and appreciation by Derek Reisfield, his grandson. Reisfield provides an inside look at Sven Gustafson's life, artistic achievements, as well as his close relationship with the celebrated actress and the icon of the "Modern Woman," Greta Garbo.
This book contains many never before seen paintings, most notably an oil portrait of Greta Garbo and a watercolor study for the Garbo portrait. It also includes many works from the collection of the legendary actress. It also contains a special surprise, a painting by Greta Garbo never before seen by the public.
